N-able Emergency Hotfix Patches Actively Exploited N-central RCE Flaw CVE-2026-86218

N-able released emergency hotfix 2026.3.1.14 (Hotfix 4) addressing a maximum-severity vulnerability in its N-central remote monitoring and management (RMM) platform. Tracked as CVE-2026-86218 with a CVSS 4.0 score of 10.0, the flaw is classified as a static code injection weakness (CWE-96) enabling unauthenticated remote threat actors to achieve arbitrary code execution directly on the underlying N-central server. The flaw affects all on-premises N-central builds prior to 2026.3.1.14, including instances patched just hours earlier with Hotfix 3 (2026.3.1.13), which addressed separate API authentication bypass flaws CVE-2026-86206 and CVE-2026-86207.

While N-able’s release notes labeled the bug unconfirmed in production, its uptime incident notice confirmed active in-the-wild exploitation. Security firm Huntress reported investigating intrusions where threat actors compromised production N-central environments, echoing prior campaigns where adversaries leveraged server access to deploy persistent Cloudflare tunnels across downstream managed endpoints via the platform’s Take Control utility. N-able has patched hosted instances and urges on-premises administrators to upgrade immediately, while defenders recommend placing management interfaces behind VPNs or strict IP allowlists.

Why it matters:

  • RMM infrastructure compromise primitive: Unauthenticated code execution on an RMM appliance grants adversaries unmitigated supervisory control over connected client endpoints, bypassing traditional perimeter defenses and endpoint isolation.
  • MSP supply-chain containment: Defenders must immediately upgrade to build 2026.3.1.14, restrict administrative console ingress to strict IP allowlists, and inspect managed endpoints for unauthorized reverse tunnels or newly created administrator accounts.
