Cisco Patches Actively Exploited Secure Email Gateway Zero-Day CVE-2026-76461
Cisco has released emergency security updates addressing a critical zero-day vulnerability in Cisco AsyncOS Software for Cisco Secure Email Gateway (SEG), tracked as CVE-2026-76461 (CVSS 9.8). The flaw stems from insufficient input validation within the gateway’s core email parsing engine, exposing underlying database processing to SQL injection. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit the vulnerability by transmitting a specially crafted email message through the appliance, triggering arbitrary SQL queries that leverage execution commands like PostgreSQL’s COPY ... TO PROGRAM to achieve remote code execution with root privileges on the underlying operating system.
Cisco Talos confirmed active in-the-wild exploitation of the flaw against enterprise production environments, prompting the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to add CVE-2026-76461 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog with an emergency remediation mandate. The vulnerability affects all physical and virtual SEG deployments running AsyncOS versions 15.5, 16.0, and 16.5, with no software workarounds available. Because successful exploitation yields full administrative control, threat actors can purge local logs or tamper with mail queues, complicating forensic analysis.
Why it matters:
- Zero-click edge gateway compromise: Delivering arbitrary root execution over standard SMTP traffic bypasses perimeter boundary controls, allowing unauthenticated attackers to subvert email security appliances, intercept communications, and pivot directly into internal networks.
- Immediate patching and egress log auditing: With no workarounds and root-level log tampering observed, organizations must urgently apply AsyncOS maintenance updates (15.5.5-0141, 16.0.4-302, 16.5.0-780) and scrutinize perimeter firewall telemetry for anomalous outbound connections from SEG appliances.
