BeyondTrust Patches Remote Support Zero-Day CVE-2026-102764 Exploited by ARMORY CASTLE
BeyondTrust has issued security advisory BT26-05 detailing a critical zero-day vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-102764 (CVSS 9.3), impacting Remote Support (RS) and Privileged Remote Access (PRA) appliances running versions 26.2.3 and earlier. The flaw stems from improper message origin validation (CWE-290) in an internal messaging service. Remote, unauthenticated adversaries exploit the defect by submitting forged inter-process messages, triggering arbitrary file upload and write primitives within appliance filesystem trees without requiring active administrative sessions or prior authentication.
Joint intelligence from BeyondTrust, Mandiant, and Google Threat Intelligence indicates active in-the-wild exploitation since August 29, 2026, attributed to China-nexus espionage cluster ARMORY CASTLE (UNC5221). Attackers abused the file manipulation primitive to deploy the obfuscated SAWFLY PHP webshell, escalate to root by creating a SUID-enabled binary /usr/bin/dbus-authd copied from /bin/sh, and establish persistent WebSocket tunnels via the custom C-based SOCKS5 proxy BARECLAW through modified HAProxy configurations. BeyondTrust has pushed automated hotfixes to SaaS deployments and released standalone patch BT26-05-RS for on-premises appliances.
Why it matters:
- Bullet 1 — Technical & Architecture Risk: Edge access appliances bridge public ingress with privileged corporate networks; internal origin validation flaws allow unauthenticated actors to execute arbitrary file operations, achieve persistent SUID root execution, and establish stealthy outbound SOCKS5 tunnels that bypass perimeter inspection.
- Bullet 2 — Strategic & Defender Imperative: Security teams must immediately apply advisory BT26-05 patches, audit
/usr/bin/for unauthorized SUID binaries, verify the integrity of local HAProxy routing configs, and hunt for anomalous WebSocket egress connections originating from appliance IP addresses.
